I was thinking about…
The First Methodist Church of Stigler, OK: A Haven of Faith and Community
By Andy Lee
This post holds a special place in my heart as I reflect on the memories of my childhood church. It was within those walls that I experienced the joys of growing up and deepening my understanding of God, Jesus, and their boundless love for each and every one of us. I can still vividly recall the countless Sundays spent in the sanctuary, listening to the sermons and worshipping our Creator.
The sanctuary itself exuded a sense of awe and reverence, especially on those sun-drenched days when the sunlight filtered through the impressive stained glass windows, painting the space with a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors. In those moments, I would often find myself fascinated by the intricate details of the stained glass, lost in the tapestry of biblical stories and teachings we had learned in Sunday School. Forgive me, dear pastors, for the times when my attention drifted from your messages; it was the irresistible allure of those stained glass windows and the tales they silently illustrated.
Attending that church was more than just an obligation—it was a place of growth, friendship, and spiritual nurturing. It was a place where young hearts were molded and where the seeds of faith were sown, taking root and blossoming within each of us. I will forever be grateful for the dedicated pastors who strived to reach every member of the congregation, guiding us on our individual journeys of faith.
As I reminisce about those treasured moments, I am reminded of the profound impact that this church had on shaping my understanding of spirituality and instilling in me a deep love for God and His teachings. It was a community that embraced all, fostering an environment of acceptance, love, and shared worship. Through the years, the church has been a steadfast beacon, illuminating our paths and reminding us of the enduring power of faith.
So, to all who have been a part of this church, from the pastors to the Sunday School teachers, the devoted congregation to the faithful worshippers, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. You have left an indelible mark on my journey of faith, and I am forever indebted to the memories and lessons I have cherished within those sacred walls.
May the legacy of this church continue to inspire and nurture generations to come, as we carry the light of God’s love into the world.
In the summer of 1895 the First Methodist Church of Stigler, Oklahoma was established with a membership of seven. With a rich history, unwavering commitment to faith, and deep roots in the community, this church has become a cornerstone for worship, fellowship, and service.
Established in 1895 the First Methodist Church has played a pivotal role in the lives of Stigler residents for over a century. Its foundations were laid by dedicated individuals who sought to create a space where people could come together to worship, seek spiritual guidance, and build a close-knit community.
The church building itself stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the congregation. Its architecture reflects a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, symbolizing the church’s ability to adapt to the changing times while staying true to its core values. As one enters the sanctuary, a sense of peace and reverence fills the air, inviting all who enter to experience a deeper connection with God and one another.
The original building was a small frame house in the Old Town. That building was sold, and the proceeds were used to purchase lots to build where the church now stands at 502 N. Broadway. In 1908 the church became a landmark of distinction with the purchase of 41 stained glass windows and the new stone building cornerstone being laid in November of that year. The church bell was purchased from a Fort Smith lumber company for a total of $61.50.
Beyond its physical structure, the First Methodist Church of Stigler is known for its warm and welcoming congregation. The church’s members have cultivated an environment where everyone feels valued and accepted, regardless of their background or circumstances. This inclusivity has been a driving force in fostering a sense of belonging and creating lifelong friendships within the church community. The Women’s Missionary Society was organized in 1895 soon after the church’s establishment. That organization is still active and known as the United Methodist Women (UMW).
Throughout the years, the church has evolved to meet the changing needs of its members and the community. The ministry encompasses various age groups, offering programs and activities tailored to children, youth, adults, and seniors. Sunday worship services, Bible studies, small groups, and community events provide opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and support.
Moreover, the First Methodist Church of Stigler is a place where individuals can find solace during challenging times. In moments of grief, loss, or personal struggles, the church offers pastoral care and a compassionate support system. The caring and dedicated clergy and staff are always ready to lend an empathetic ear, provide guidance, and offer a message of hope and healing.
Whether you are a long-standing member, a newcomer to Stigler, or simply passing through, the First Methodist Church warmly invites you to experience the warmth, joy, and sense of belonging that permeates its walls. In a world often characterized by chaos and uncertainty, this church stands as a beacon of faith, hope, and love, reminding us all of the transformative power of community and the enduring presence of God’s grace.
