I was thinking about…
Writing on My Terms
by Andy Lee
Lately, I’ve been hearing from a few people who think they have the right to tell me what I should and shouldn’t write about. Apparently, my words are stepping on some toes, ruffling some feathers, or otherwise making certain folks uncomfortable. To that, I say: too bad.
I write because I have something to say. That doesn’t mean every piece I publish is an opinion piece, nor does it mean I’m here to push a political agenda. Some days, I’ll write about history—because I find it fascinating. Other times, I’ll write about an everyday moment that caught my attention—because life itself is worth observing. And yes, sometimes I will write about politics or social issues—because I have thoughts on them, just like everyone else. But what I won’t do is tailor my writing to fit into someone else’s comfort zone.
If you don’t like what I write, that’s fine. No one is forcing you to read it. If you want to unfollow me, unfriend me, or even “cancel” me (whatever that means these days), go right ahead. I won’t beg anyone to stick around. My writing isn’t about seeking approval—it’s about expressing what I believe is worth saying.
As long as we live in a country where the First Amendment still stands, I will continue to use my voice. If that bothers some people, so be it. But I won’t be told what I should or should not write.
“A writer who is afraid to overstep boundaries is not a writer.” – Roberto Bolaño
