I Was Thinking About…Jim Thorpe Overcoming Adversity at the 1912 Olympics
By Andy Lee
This remarkable photo shows Native American athlete Jim Thorpe shortly after winning two Olympic gold medals for the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Games in Stockholm, Sweden. But look closely and you’ll notice Thorpe’s feet are clad in two very different shoes, along with uneven sock heights. Rather than a fashion statement, this was the result of an act of sabotage that failed to deter Thorpe from athletic glory.
Jim Thorpe was born in 1887 in Indian Territory, part of today’s Oklahoma. He was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation and grew up immersed in Native American culture. As a young man, Thorpe attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, where he honed his skills in football, baseball, lacrosse, and track.
By 1912, Thorpe had developed into one of the most versatile athletes in America. He was selected for the U.S. Olympic team that traveled to Stockholm for the Games that summer. Thorpe was favored to shine in the grueling multi-event track and field competitions.
The night before the high jump event, Thorpe discovered his athletic shoes had been stolen from his locker room. Suspecting a jealous opponent was hoping to gain an advantage, Thorpe scrambled to find replacement footwear. According to legend, he found two old, unmatched shoes in a trash can.
One shoe was too large, so Thorpe wore multiple pairs of socks for padding. But he refused to let the sabotage effort dash his dreams. Wearing the clunky, mismatched shoes, Thorpe captured gold in the high jump event.
Next came the pentathlon and decathlon competitions. Over two days, Thorpe placed near the top in events like the 1,500-meter run, long jump, javelin, and 100-meter dash. Despite the odd assortment of shoes, Thorpe’s superb skill shone through. He handily won gold in both prestigious multi-event disciplines.
As this photo shows, nothing could stop Jim Thorpe from excelling, not even competing in clownish shoes. He set Olympic records that stood for decades and became the first Native American athlete to win gold for the United States. His example demonstrated the persevering spirit that all humans are capable of when faced with obstacles.
Thorpe was hailed as a national hero upon his return to America. But the next year, his medals were revoked when it was discovered he had briefly played minor league baseball, disqualifying his Olympic amateur status.
Yet Jim Thorpe’s legendary feats in Stockholm remain among the greatest achievements in Olympic track and field history. Over 50 years later, the Olympic Committee finally reinstated his records and medals posthumously. Modern pentathletes still honor Thorpe as the exemplar of their demanding sport.
Jim Thorpe went on to play professional baseball, football, and basketball, becoming a superstar athlete in multiple sports. He played a key role in the formation of what became the National Football League (NFL). He was the first president of the American Professional Football Association, which was founded in 1920 and two years later was renamed the NFL. Thorpe’s athletic prowess earned him accolades as the greatest male athlete of the 20th century.
But it was Thorpe’s grace under fire at the 1912 Olympics that cemented his legacy. Outwardly at a disadvantage with his mismatched shoes, he called upon his full abilities to capture gold twice over. His self-confidence and refusal to accept defeat spoke to the power of equality, perseverance, and human potential.
The person who tried to ruin Thorpe’s chances for glory could not have imagined how their petty actions would backfire. Rather than impeding him, the missing shoes called forth Thorpe’s greatness under adversity. He transformed an act of cruelty into a profound demonstration of the strength within.
Though he passed away in 1953, the image of Jim Thorpe in ridiculous shoes endures as a timeless inspiration. It reminds us that no matter what unfair burdens others may place upon us, our capacities and spirit remain undimmed. Like Thorpe, we each can rise above life’s difficulties through determination, skill, and grace.
So, the next time you face an obstacle meant to trip you up, remember this photo of Jim Thorpe. Let it call forth your courage to shine radiantly, no matter the circumstances. Draw inspiration from his example to find success with the gifts you hold – even two mismatched shoes.
Stay curious, keep exploring! 😊
