Loeb Strauss, who later came to be known as Levi, was born in 1829 in Bavaria, Germany. The youngest in a family of seven children, he lost his father to tuberculosis when he was just 16 years old. After this tragic loss, and with the Gold Rush luring folks to new opportunities, Levi and his two sisters decided to join their brothers in New York in 1847.
In New York, Levi began his career in the bustling world of commerce under the mentorship of his brothers, who ran J. Strauss Brother & Co., a dry goods business. This laid the groundwork for his business acumen. Yet, the sprawling expanse of America had more in store for young Levi.
The Gold Rush of 1849 was creating a new frontier for business, and San Francisco was its beating heart. Intrigued by the promise of golden opportunities, Levi moved west in 1853. His initial aim was to establish a West Coast branch of his brothers’ business, little knowing that he was about to carve a niche for himself in a completely different area.
Levi began selling a variety of goods, including canvas and fabric, to the flood of people who were drawn to the city by the Gold Rush. His fortunes changed when he crossed paths with a resourceful tailor named Jacob Davis. Davis, one of Levi’s customers, had been experimenting with copper rivets to reinforce the stress points in pants, which made them more durable for the demanding work of miners.
However, Davis lacked the funds to patent his innovative idea. Seeing the potential in this concept, Levi became his business partner. They jointly acquired a patent for “Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings” in 1873, and the first pair of blue jeans, then known as ‘waist overalls,’ was created.
Early versions of these overalls had a distinctive design: a button fly, one back pocket, a tiny watch pocket, and copper rivets for strength. Indigo-dyed denim gave them their iconic blue color. The design has evolved over the years, with the leather patch added in 1873 and belt loops becoming a standard feature only in the early 20th century.
The rise of Levi Strauss & Co. was nothing short of phenomenal. Levi proved himself not just a capable entrepreneur but also a visionary leader. He understood that it was not enough to create a great product; he also needed to build a strong relationship with his customers and the community.
This is where Levi’s story becomes more than just a tale of commercial success. He was also a dedicated philanthropist, contributing to numerous causes throughout his lifetime. His donations ranged from funding 28 scholarships at the University of California, Berkeley, to assisting multiple orphanages and entities for public education in San Francisco.
Levi’s death in 1902 left a massive void, but his legacy lives on. The brand he founded is still a household name, globally recognized for its denim jeans. In our wardrobes, on the streets, at rock concerts, and even on high-fashion runways—Levi’s impact is everywhere.
