Justin Jones and Justin Pearson Reinstated to Tennessee Legislature
By Andy Lee
Two Tennessee Democrats who were expelled from the legislature last week for participating in a gun control protest have been reinstated.
Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were both voted out of the Tennessee House of Representatives on Friday, April 7, after they were accused of violating House decorum rules by participating in a protest that blocked the chamber’s doors. The protest was held in response to a school shooting in Nashville that killed three children and three adults.
The expulsions of Jones and Pearson were met with widespread criticism, including from some Republicans. Many people saw it as an attempt by Republicans to stifle dissent and protect the interests of the gun lobby.
On Monday, April 10, the Nashville Metropolitan Council voted unanimously to reinstate Jones. On Wednesday, April 12, the Shelby County Commission voted unanimously to reinstate Pearson.
The reinstatements of Jones and Pearson are a victory for gun control advocates and a setback for Republicans who have sought to silence their voices. The two lawmakers have vowed to continue fighting for gun control measures in the Tennessee legislature.
In a statement, Jones said, “I am grateful to the Nashville Metropolitan Council for reinstating me to my seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives. I will continue to fight for common-sense gun safety measures in our state.”
Pearson echoed Jones’s sentiments, saying, “I am grateful to the Shelby County Commission for reinstating me to my seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives. I will continue to fight for the people of Shelby County and for common-sense gun safety measures in our state.”
The reinstatement of Jones and Pearson is a significant development in the ongoing debate over gun control in Tennessee. It is also a reminder that the power of the people can overcome the power of special interests. The POWER of the PEOPLE is more POWERFUL than the people in power. In the wake of the recent school shooting in Nashville, it is more important than ever that lawmakers take action to keep our communities safe.
