America: A House Divided

America: A House Divided

Matthew 12:22-28

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

The current state of politics in America is a house divided. The two major political parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, are more divided than ever before. They disagree on everything from the role of government to the importance of social issues. This division has led to gridlock in Washington, D.C., and a lack of progress on important issues.

The phrase “a house divided cannot stand” was used in a speech by Abraham Lincoln in 1858. Lincoln was speaking about the issue of slavery, which was dividing the country at the time. He warned that if the country could not remain united, it would eventually fall apart.

Lincoln’s words are just as relevant today as they were in 1858. The current political divide in America is a threat to our democracy. If we cannot find a way to come together, our country will eventually fall apart.

There are a number of reasons for the current political divide in America. One reason is the rise of social media. Social media has allowed people to connect with others who share their views, and this has led to echo chambers where people are only exposed to one side of an issue. This has made it difficult for people to have civil conversations about important issues.

Another reason for the political divide is the decline of trust in institutions. Americans have less trust in the government, the media, and other institutions than they did in the past. This lack of trust has made it difficult for people to come together and find common ground.

The political divide in America is a serious problem, but it is not insurmountable. There are a number of things that we can do to address the problem. One thing that we can do is to listen to each other. We need to be willing to hear the other side’s point of view, even if we don’t agree with it. We also need to be respectful of each other, even when we disagree.

Another thing that we can do is to support institutions that promote civil discourse. We need to support the media, the courts, and other institutions that help us to have a healthy democracy. We also need to support education, which is essential for creating informed citizens.

The political divide in America is a challenge, but it is also an opportunity. If we can find a way to come together, we can build a stronger and more united country.
